Jenny Blake, in Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One, uses an analogy of moving from one lily pad to another, and how knowing the lily pad you want to reach defines the goal, but getting there could take different paths.
Think of your community as the frog who is deciding where it wants to go. You develop a plan, setting the goal or end point. Now, what is the path to get there. You have more than one option. Will some paths be more treacherous than others? What if you jump/proceed to the next lily pad, and find it isn’t what you thought it would be or that it doesn’t get you to the goal in the way you expected? Don’t worry, you can choose to go back to your previous starting point or you can proceed to a different stop along the way.
Don’t be afraid to move in a chosen direction or spend an excess time trying to pick the correct path (analysis paralysis). Mistakes become lessons learned. Absorb them and move to a different point. Some things are going to be unknown. Be ready to adapt at any stage. You can reach the goal, as long as you keep moving toward it. The only way to fail is to stay right where you are and take no action.
